We have had a fabulous start to classes this semester!! The kids are eager to learn and create awesome works of art. This semester we are focusing on COMPOSITION. Composition is the most important part of art. Without good composition you do not have an interesting or intriguing work of art. The children are learning how to take the elements of art such as; line, shape, color, texture, rhythm, balance and focal point, to create compositions that attract and keep attention.
We started our exploration of composition with a simple study in lines, shapes, color, balance and repetition. We looked at the abstract works of Wassily Kandinsky and Sonia Delaunay. Their work is perfect to introduce the concept of focal point and balance. We looked at how they used converging lines and contrasting color to make their focal point pop out. We also looked at how they used repetition of shapes and color to give their work balance and unity. The children then started on a drawing of shapes and lines, trying to use all that they learned in class. Then they added color to their composition using watercolors.
Next week we will begin on a composition that will touch on the use of perspective in art.
Thank you for trusting us with your children in these crazy and uncertain times. They are a true source of joy and inspiration.
